Where DIY goes wrong on a Gelco is the top end. The damper body sits at the top of the flue, and getting to it means working on the roof. The spring under tension can take a finger off if it releases while you’re fiddling with the mounting bracket. And matching cable length to damper travel isn’t a “close enough” job; if it’s too short the blade won’t seat, too long and it won’t open for burning.
