Famco Crown Repair: The Waldorf Owner’s Guide

If your Famco chimney cap crown has cracked, rusted through, or started letting water run down the flue, we can match it and replace it, usually within a few days of your call. Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco crowns fit their standard cap lines: the A-Series, E-Series, and the heavier SC-Series stainless crowns they built for the coastal and high-wind market. The compatibility gotcha most Waldorf homeowners hit is that Famco changed crown lip dimensions between the A-Series and E-Series runs. An A-Series crown will not drop cleanly onto an E-Series base, and vice versa. If you have the original cap, flip it over and look for the stamped model number on the base ring. No stamp? Famco crowns come in sizes from 6-inch up to 14-inch openings, in 1-inch increments, and the spacing between the mounting holes is different on the 8-inch and 10-inch models. OEM Famco crowns are still made for most of their current lineup, and for a part that lives in direct sun and rain, we usually recommend staying with OEM. The aftermarket equivalents for these crowns are thinner gauge and tend to warp at the mounting tabs. For a discontinued Famco model, a properly measured aftermarket crown can work fine, but you want someone who will tell you the gauge difference rather than just sell you the cheaper shelf part. Signs Your Famco Crown Repair Is Failing

• Water stains on the ceiling near the chimney chase. The crown is supposed to shed water outward, but once the seal or the metal itself fails, water runs straight down the flue and soaks whatever is underneath. Stains usually show up after two or three consecutive rain days.
• Rust streaks on the cap or crown itself. Galvanized and even stainless crowns eventually give up in Maryland humidity and road salt air coming up from the Potomac. What starts as a surface streak becomes a pinhole, then a split.
• A crown that sits loose or shifts when the wind gusts. The mounting tabs bend before they break, so a crown that rocks in place is a crown that is days or weeks from coming off the chimney entirely. You can sometimes hear it rattle from inside the house.
• Debris in the firebox that looks like metal flakes or dust. That is the underside of the crown shedding. It is more visible on prefab fireplaces than on masonry, but once you see it, the crown is already compromised.
• Draft problems that were not there last season. A crowned off or partially opened crown changes the pressure at the flue top, and a fireplace that used to draw fine starts backdrafting. It presents like a flue blockage, but the crown is often the real culprit.

Most of this job is ladder work and roof work, not mechanical work. The crown itself is four bolts, but reaching it means getting to the top of a chimney, often on a slope, often in wind coming across the St. Charles Town Center corridor. We have seen homeowners do this safely, and we have also seen the driveway visit from the emergency room that followed a gust of wind and a wrong step. If your roof is a low slope and the chimney is easy to reach, and you own a proper ladder and a fall harness, you can inspect the crown from the roofline.
