• Stiff or sticky control handle. That’s usually the cable binding inside the conduit between the firebox and the flue cap. Heat cycling over five or ten Maryland winters will kink and stretch the cable until it starts fighting you.
• Metal-on-metal grinding when closing. The pivot shaft on the plate assembly runs through a bushing that wears out. When the bushing goes, you’ll feel the scrape through the handle. Left alone, it will chew up the shaft and then you’re replacing the whole plate.
• Water or rust stains below the damper. Waldorf gets about 42 inches of rain a year, plus the occasional coastal storm that takes a left turn along the Potomac.
